So I returned Apple’s Magic Mouse today (Review)

Apple released the long awaited update to their mouse line to replace the much hated Mighty Mouse. The Magic Mouse is a big step in mouse design by removing everything and giving you only a one click mouse with touch capabilities. The whole surface of the mouse is one big trackpad. This allows you to right click, scroll, navigate pages and photos and zoom. The mouse has very basic and simple options in the system prefs. The Magic Mouse is a laser mouse and is powered by two AA batteries. Apple says that you will get about 3 months of use out of the mouse before changing the batteries but in only 4 days I was down to a 50% charge.

The Magic Mouse has a very low profile. Its about a little thicker than an iPhone 3GS. Because of the low profile, it is very hard for someone to use the mouse with large hands, like me. After a couple of hours using it my hands started to cramp up. I wish Apple would have created a thicker mouse.

The touch gestures was something to get use to. Scrolling was strange because of the lack of a scroll wheel. If you do a lot of scrolling then I think the Magic Mouse isn’t really going to be for you. Dragging your finger across the plastic after a while started to make my finger sore. To go forwards and backwards through pages and photos, you put two fingers down on the mouse and swipe them either to the left or to the right. This is awkward trying to do it while your holding the mouse, again something that you would need to get use to.

The Magic Mouse is a better mouse than the Mighty Mouse that brings radical changes. The touch features really makes this mouse stand alone in an all new category of mice. Yet if you have large hands or are a power user and need more functionality in a mouse than this isn’t for you. I ended up returning this mouse because is was uncomfortable to use. I’m probably going to go with the Logitech Performance MX Mouse. I was testing it out in Best Buy today and it was very comfortable in my hands and has a nice scroll wheel too.
